Safety and Prevention
NSVRC has three cardinal rules they like to provide to those who are unsure what to do when confronted with a situation involving sexual assault, especially when it comes to educating others on the seriousness and reality of sexual assault:
-
Share the information you know about sexual violence and say that it is never the victim’s fault.
-
Ask respectful questions about the person’s attitude. Why do they feel that way? Maybe having a discussion could change their attitude or belief.
-
Tell them those comments are not appreciated in your home (or in your presence) and you would like them to stop.
Linked below is a packet created by NSVRC entitled, "Engaging Bystanders to Prevent Sexual Violence". If you're interested in how you can prevent sexual assault in your community, feel free to explore this resource below.
How You Can Support Survivors
Friends and family who know someone who has gone through sexual assault often don't know how to help or what to do to support them. NSVRC offers a 23-page comprehensive guide to supporting survivors, originally created by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape. They also offer a link to a workbook created by the As One Project to help family and friends find a next step in their support of a survivor of sexual assault. Both the guide and the workbook can be accessed below.
